Fatima religious tourism and pilgrimage activities
Overview
Developments in July and August 2026 highlight the expansion of Fátima’s religious tourism and devotional activities in Portugal and Brazil.
In Portugal, the Sanctuary of Fátima has commenced its International Anniversary Pilgrimage in August. Presided over by Apostolic Nuncio Andrés Carrascosa, the event commemorates the fourth apparition and includes the National Pilgrimage of the Migrant and Refugee. Traditional elements include Eucharistic processions, the blessing of the sick, and the 86th occurrence of the wheat offering, a custom dating back to 1940.
Regional pilgrimages continue to be organized, including the Diocese of Guarda’s annual event on 26–27 August and the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso’s civic pilgrimage on 8 August. Looking toward 2027, the XIV International Workshops on Religious Tourism (IWRT) are scheduled for 9–10 March at the Centro Pastoral de Paulo VI. Organized by ACISO and the Ourém municipality, the workshops aim to reinforce Portugal’s status as a premier religious tourism destination through networking and institutional briefings.
In Brazil, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima in Crato, Ceará, has received official permission to construct a second authorized replica of the Capelinha das Aparições. This project, mirroring the 1919 design, joins an existing replica in Rio de Janeiro to serve as a center for prayer and evangelization.
