Ferencváros fan banner controversy

A controversy emerged in Hungarian football following a derby match between Ferencváros (FTC) and Újpest FC, where supporters displayed threatening banners at the Groupama Arena. Messages included threats of death and physical assault, such as “If you harm Fradi, we will beat you to death,” and “Love Fradi, and you will be happy. If you harm Fradi, you will be dead.” A banner was also directed at FTC president Gábor Kubatov stating, “Gábor Kubatov, start worrying.”

In response, FTC president Gábor Kubatov issued a statement on social media urging supporters to refrain from violence and intimidation. The Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) launched a disciplinary investigation, stating that all forms of blackmail, threats, and hate speech are unacceptable and exceed the boundaries of standard disciplinary procedures. The MLSZ noted that the severity of the messages involves the jurisdiction of the police and the justice system. The Budapest Police Department confirmed a supplementary investigation is underway following a report by a private individual.

Major sponsor Magyar Telekom issued a formal warning, distancing itself from the aggressive behavior and noting that such intimidation contradicts its values of a safe and family-friendly stadium environment. Telekom requested information on future prevention measures from both FTC and the arena operator, Sportfive Hungary Kft., but clarified it will continue its sponsorship of the club, its staff, and its athletes.
