Fetal Alcohol Syndrome awareness and support in Poland

In Poland, efforts to address Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are being highlighted through both educational initiatives and advocacy for systemic reform.

A conference titled ‘FAS bez tajemnic’ (FAS without secrets) was organized in Lublin to educate professionals, such as psychologists and educators, on the impact of alcohol on fetal development. The event aimed to emphasize that “there is no safe dose of alcohol during pregnancy.”

Concurrently, advocates have raised concerns regarding the significant challenges faced by affected children and their families. Reports indicate a lack of official diagnoses and insufficient state support in Poland, with an estimated number of children born with alcohol-induced brain damage large enough to fill over 300 school classrooms annually. Those living with FAS face a low average life expectancy of 30 to 34 years. Małgorzata Korolczuk, president of the FASMisja Foundation, has called for better recognition of these disorders to mitigate social stigma and bullying.

Recent data from experts in Lublin indicates a rise in diagnoses. It is estimated that between 900 and 1,000 children are born annually in Poland with full-symptom FAS. The Regional Point for Diagnosis and Therapy of Children with FAS and FASD in Lublin reported a significant increase in activity, with cases rising from 59 to 134 reports over the last year.

Experts note that FAS and FASD can cause permanent central nervous system damage, including cognitive deficits and speech delays. Due to a lack of awareness, these symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed as ADHD or autism. Professionals emphasize that early diagnosis, ideally before age five, is crucial for providing necessary neurological and educational support.
