FIFA tournament hosting and financial announcements

Overview

FIFA has confirmed that Qatar will host the final stages of the 2026 Intercontinental Cup from December 9 to December 16 at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium and the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium. Paris Saint-Germain has secured a direct spot in the final on December 16. The schedule includes the ‘Derby of the Americas’ on December 9 between Toluca and the Copa Libertadores winner, followed by the ‘Challenger Cup’ on December 12 featuring Mamelodi Sundowns.

The United States is set to host the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup from January 5 to 30, 2028. The tournament will feature 19 clubs from six confederations, eventually reduced to 16 teams after a play-off phase. The slot distribution includes six for UEFA, three each for AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, and CONMEBOL, and one for OFC. Seven clubs have already qualified: Arsenal, FC Barcelona, Club América Femenil, Gotham FC, Naegohyang Women’s FC, Corinthians, and Wuhan Jiangda. The remaining 12 spots will be determined by performance in continental club competitions between the 2024 and 2027 seasons. FIFA selected the United States for this event due to its sporting infrastructure, experience in hosting major events, and the growing interest in women’s football within the country. This tournament is scheduled to be held every four years.

Regarding the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, FIFA has approved financial principles to ensure gender equity. Each participating member association will receive US$ 2.5 million for tournament preparation, matching the support provided to men’s teams for the 2026 World Cup. This represents more than double the support provided during the 2023 edition. Female players will receive the same level of services as male players from the 2026 edition, including business-class travel and individual accommodations.
