Financial crisis at Pirin Blagoevgrad

Overview

The Bulgarian football club Pirin Blagoevgrad is facing a severe financial crisis that has triggered leadership changes and threatened its professional status.

In early September, municipal officials in Blagoevgrad moved to terminate the manager of the municipal company OFK Pirin EOOD. This administrative shift followed the departure of Georgi Kalpakchiev from PFC Pirin 22 AD, who cited the club’s accumulated debts and inability to secure new investors as reasons for his exit.

By October, the situation escalated as the Bulgarian Football Union’s Licensing Commission prepared to potentially revoke the club’s professional license. The club has been operating under a conditional license due to debts to the National Revenue Agency totaling 205,600 euros. These financial difficulties have resulted in unpaid salaries and a roster largely composed of 16-year-old players. While Kalpakchiev expressed intentions to transfer his shares to local businessmen and veterans, the transfer has not yet been finalized.
