Financial irregularities in Guerrero State Congress

Overview

The Guerrero State Congress is under investigation for significant financial irregularities. An audit by the Federal Auditor's Office (ASF) identified approximately 90.7 million pesos in potential damage to the Federal Public Treasury from 2020 accounts. This includes 55.5 million pesos in Citizen Support for Attention funds that lacked sufficient verification, such as photographic evidence, and 35.2 million pesos allegedly misallocated through excessive personnel service payments.

Parallel to the ASF audit, a suspected fraud involving the forgery of signatures on checks has emerged. Initial reports indicated 30 checks belonging to 21 deputies were forged, potentially involving over 15 million pesos. Subsequent reports expanded this scope, suggesting the fraud could involve more than 20 million pesos and up to 50 forged checks.

Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda has addressed the allegations, stating she respects the separation of powers and that the legislative branch is responsible for providing updates. The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) has requested financial documentation from the Congress as part of its investigation into potential embezzlement, fraud, and document falsification.
