Financial literacy and economic research in Romania

Overview

Romania has implemented several initiatives focused on economic research and financial literacy. In mid-2026, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) launched the ‘Household Financing and Consumption’ statistical research in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics and the Institute for Research and Evaluation of Strategy. This study, part of a European-wide survey, seeks to analyze household income, credit, and savings to compare Romania’s economic status with other European nations.

Simultaneously, efforts to improve financial education were expanded through teacher workshops and academic partnerships. Earlier programs focused on training over 600 educators across 21 cities on topics such as budget management and fraud risks. These efforts have since evolved into broader collaborations involving the Financial Supervisory Authority and the Institute for Financial Studies, featuring programs like the Investment Academy and the ASF Academic Laboratory. Additionally, community outreach has expanded to include interactive educational zones at public events to teach budgeting and money management to students and parents.
