Financial literacy and preparedness in Brazil
Overview
Recent studies and surveys in Brazil have highlighted significant gaps in financial preparedness and literacy among consumers.
A MetLife study identified a ‘preparation paradox’ in Brazil, where 68% of respondents believe they can handle unexpected events, yet only 36% feel financially prepared for their primary concerns. Brazilian consumers tend to rely on personal strategies, such as saving (55%) or seeking support from family and friends (25%), rather than formal insurance, which is cited by only 15% as a protection strategy.
Further research by IPESPE for the Febraban Observatory identified a literacy gap, noting that while 91% of respondents view financial education as important, 55% reported understanding little to nothing about the subject. New data from the Locomotiva Institute, commissioned by Abrapp, highlights a similar disconnect among Brazilians aged 18 to 30. While 80% express concern regarding their financial future, only 34% believe they are taking concrete steps to prepare. Additionally, 60% of these young adults make financial decisions based on a horizon of six months or less, and for half of those surveyed, thinking about retirement triggers anxiety.
Responses to these challenges vary across sectors. In the commercial sector, credit life insurance (Seguro Prestamista) saw significant movement, with data from CNseg and Susep showing over R$ 21 billion in premiums moved in 2025 and nearly R$ 4 billion paid out in indemnities. Meanwhile, the Universal church has launched programs such as ‘Liberation & Spiritual Battle Week’ to address debt and financial frustration through spiritual teachings.
