Financial restructuring of Brazil's Correios
Overview
The Brazilian state-owned postal service, Correios, is facing significant financial instability characterized by substantial net losses. In the first half of 2026, the company reported an accumulated loss of R$ 5.5 billion, representing a 30.36% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
To address these deficits, Correios has sought external financing, including a formal request for a R$ 7 billion loan from private banks requiring a National Treasury guarantee. This follows a previous R$ 12 billion loan obtained in late 2025. In response to these fiscal challenges, the Brazilian federal government announced a R$ 6 billion capital injection to be included in the 2027 Annual Budget Law as part of a broader restructuring plan. The government intends to fund this through fiscal adjustment measures and spending reviews.
