Fishing regulations in Argentina and Chile

Overview

In Chubut, Argentina, the provincial government authorized continental sport fishing in specific Andean water bodies, including the Futaleufú and Corcovado rivers, through October 30. This measure was intended to boost tourism in the cordillera region. The regulation required a “mandatory return of all captured specimens” to ensure sustainable resource management.

By late October, fishing regulations expanded in other regions. In Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, the sports fishing season was scheduled to run from October 30, 2026, to May 2, 2027, featuring specific permit fees and a mandatory catch-and-release policy starting in March 2027. Authorities also advised disinfecting equipment to mitigate the spread of invasive Didymo algae.

Concurrently, Chile declared a preventive emergency due to the threat of Harmful Algal Blooms (red tide) across 15 coastal regions, effective from November 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. This measure aims to protect public health and the economy from microalgae toxins that can accumulate in shellfish.
