Flamingo sightings on the Italian coast
Overview
In late August 2026, a young pink flamingo was rescued from Sassonia beach in Fano after appearing immobile and exhausted. The Wildlife Animal Recovery Center (CRAS) assessed the bird, noting that such sightings are rare for that section of the Adriatic coast and suggesting the animal may have been suffering from exhaustion following a long flight.
By late September, sightings of young flamingos and other migratory birds were reported along the Abruzzo coast, specifically between Ortona, Fossacesia, and Pescara. In response to local concern regarding the birds' health, WWF Abruzzo issued guidance advising the public to maintain distance and avoid disturbing the animals. The association emphasized that resting birds may not be injured and cautioned against feeding, moving, or attempting to capture them, as such actions can cause significant stress and prevent energy recovery.
