Flood and landslide risks in Lào Cai, Vietnam

Authorities in Lào Cai province, Vietnam, have issued warnings and urgent directives regarding the risk of flash floods, landslides, and ground subsidence following significant rainfall.

Initial warnings were issued after 24-hour rainfall exceeded 100 mm in some areas, with soil moisture levels in certain regions surpassing 70%. This triggered alerts for 54 communes and wards.

Following forecasts of continued heavy rain—with some local areas potentially exceeding 120 mm—the Chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee issued an urgent directive. Local authorities have been instructed to implement the ‘four on-the-spot’ principle to ensure readiness with personnel, equipment, food, and supplies. Preparations include 24-hour duty shifts, monitoring of high-risk zones, and the development of evacuation plans specifically prioritizing vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Recent meteorological reports indicate continued rainfall, with some areas recording over 60 mm. Soil moisture levels in certain parts of the province remain above 70%. Officials have warned of potential flash floods on small rivers and streams, as well as landslides on steep hillsides and along transport routes. At least 21 communes and wards remain under alert.
