Flood protection and infrastructure in Central Greece

Overview

Greek authorities have initiated significant infrastructure and flood protection measures in the Thessaly and Phthiotis regions to mitigate extreme weather impacts.

In early September 2026, the Ministries of National Economy and Finance and Environment and Energy announced the ‘Aqua Montis’ program. This mountain hydrology initiative, totaling approximately 123 million euros, utilizes nature-based solutions to enhance flood and erosion protection. The program involves constructing roughly 1,300 structures, such as dams and pre-dams, across several mountain basins to prevent landslides and flooding in lowland areas.

By mid-September 2026, regional efforts in Phthiotis expanded to include specific road and technical works. The Governor of Central Greece inspected eight infrastructure projects valued at approximately 13.2 million euros. These works include restoring embankments, maintaining road networks, repairing bridges, and cleaning technical works in the Vistriza stream and the old Spercheios River bed to improve regional safety and connectivity.
