Flooding and rescue incidents in Odisha

Overview

Heavy rains and rising river levels in Odisha, India, have led to several survival and rescue incidents. In the Bhitarkanika region, a forest department team used a boat to rescue a mother deer and her fawn from the fast-flowing Baitarani River after the animals were swept away by the current.

In a separate incident in the Brahmani River, an elderly woman identified as Kesi Dalai survived for approximately 12 hours after slipping into the water near her village. She drifted between 25 and 30 kilometers downstream through floodwaters before being spotted by two fishermen, Abhijit Sahoo and Sudhir Mallick, near Pattamundai in the Kendrapara district. Despite the river being noted as “crocodile-infested,” the woman was rescued in an exhausted but stable condition and transported to a local hospital.
