Flooding and management crisis at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Heavy rainfall and flooding in the Bangkok area continue to cause operational disruptions at Suvarnabhumi Airport. While flight schedules remain active, flooding on the Lat Krabang route has created significant traffic issues. Travelers are advised to avoid the Lat Krabang area and use the motorway or Burapha Withi Expressway instead.

Thai Airways has faced intense scrutiny from government officials following a crisis involving flight delays and over 100 pieces of unprocessed luggage. Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul criticized the airline’s management, alleging that while flooding caused staff shortages, the primary cause was poor management. He specifically claimed Thai Airways diverted its own staff to handle ground services for partner airlines to avoid contractual penalties, stating the situation has “severely damaged Thailand’s tourism image.”

In response, Airports of Thailand (AOT) has coordinated with the Royal Thai Air Force and Thailand Post to provide manpower for sorting and transporting luggage. While Thai Airways CEO Chai Eamsiri attributed delays to personnel shortages caused by flooding, officials reported that some military personnel assisting with baggage removal were not provided with “adequate food or accommodation” by the airline.

As the crisis persists, Thai Airways has announced a 30% reduction in flights to manage capacity and aims to clear approximately 5,600 pieces of delayed luggage within 72 hours. Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat indicated that the Ministry of Transport is considering an urgent meeting with the Thai Airways board. Officials emphasized that compensation for affected passengers remains the direct responsibility of the airline.
