Flooding in Treinta y Tres, Uruguay

Intense rainfall and rising levels of the Olimar River and its tributaries have caused significant flooding in the Treinta y Tres department of Uruguay. The flooding has displaced over 1,600 people, with approximately 100 individuals moved to municipal shelters and roughly 1,500 others choosing to self-evacuate.

Local authorities, including Intendant Mario Silvera, are coordinating with the National Emergency System (Sinae) to manage logistics and request national economic support. The Ministry of Housing has begun providing homes to vulnerable families affected by the weather.

As the emergency continues, the government of Treinta y Tres has suspended traditional Independence Day celebrations, such as the civic-military parade and gaucho cavalry procession. Officials stated the decision was made to prioritize resources and institutional efforts toward assisting displaced families and repairing damaged infrastructure. A simplified floral offering ceremony will be held at Plaza 19 de Abril instead of the large-scale festivities.
