Florio dynasty historical cultural projects

Overview

Cultural projects exploring the history of the Florio dynasty have emerged in Italy, focusing on the family’s origins in Calabria before their rise to prominence in Sicily.

A historical novel titled ‘I Florio di Calabria’, written by Fulvio Cama and Maria Cavallo, premiered in Reggio Calabria. The book covers two centuries of history starting in the mid-1600s, aiming to “recover a marginalized historical memory” regarding the skills and opportunities found in the Calabria region.

In tandem with these historical explorations, a theatrical and musical production titled ‘I Florio di Calabria, Leoni di Sicilia’ was presented at the Teatro Francesco Cilea. This production, created by Fulvio Cama and Sara Cappello, traces the family’s economic and social ascent from wine and fish preservation in Bagnara to their eventual decline. A tour of the United States is scheduled for October 2026, with planned performances in New York and Washington, alongside academic engagements.
