Overview

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s political party affiliation was erroneously changed in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) system, briefly listing him as a member of the Missão party and removing his affiliation with the Liberal Party (PL). This error initially prevented the formal registration of his presidential candidacy.

The TSE clarified that the incident was not a system hack but rather the “misuse” or “improper use” of tools by a user linked to the Missão party. Renan Santos, president of the Missão party, claimed there was evidence of unauthorized access to Flávio Bolsonaro’s email to facilitate the fraudulent registration. In response, TSE President Minister Kassio Nunes Marques ordered the immediate restoration of Bolsonaro’s affiliation with the PL, effective from November 2021, and authorized the use of the Candex system to proceed with his candidacy registration. The Minister also ordered the preservation of access logs from the Filia system and directed the Federal Police to investigate the circumstances of the unauthorized change.

The Missão party filed a criminal complaint with the TSE, signed by Renan Santos, alleging “intentional alteration of data in the affiliation process” and “ideological falsehood.” Following the incident, the TSE temporarily suspended the processing of new registrations within the Party Affiliation System (Filia). The court also noted an attempted false affiliation involving President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that was not finalized. STF Minister Gilmar Mendes characterized the event as a “bug” or “glitch,” emphasizing that the Brazilian electoral system remains reliable.
