Food safety and counterfeit enforcement in India

Overview

Law enforcement and food safety officials in India have conducted several major raids targeting food adulteration and counterfeit production.

In late September, police in Rajasthan and Gujarat dismantled counterfeit dairy and packaging operations. In Jaipur, authorities arrested individuals and seized over 61,000 fake packaging materials designed to mimic established ghee brands. Simultaneously, police in Gujarat seized thousands of liters of suspected adulterated milk and large quantities of vegetable ghee and milk powder.

In October, a major raid in Jaipur targeted a pickle manufacturing firm, ‘Shree Shyam Foods’. Officials discovered approximately 85,000 kilograms of contaminated raw materials and finished pickles. Inspectors reported severe sanitary violations, including the presence of dead lizards and insects within processing tanks. The firm has been sealed, its license is being suspended, and the contaminated stock is slated for destruction.
