Food safety enforcement in Northern India

Overview

Food safety authorities in Northern India have conducted intensive inspection and enforcement drives to combat food adulteration ahead of the festive season.

In late August, officials in Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad targeted spurious dairy products. Actions included the destruction of hundreds of kilograms of contaminated paneer and rasgullas, some of which were found in unhygienic conditions.

By late September, the Delhi Government’s Food Safety Department reported a significant escalation in enforcement, having seized and destroyed more than 4,100 kg of adulterated dairy products, including khoya, paneer, chhena, and ghee. Laboratory analysis of samples collected at Mori Gate Khoya Mandi revealed that a majority of khoya samples were unsafe for human consumption. The department has initiated prosecution proceedings against food business operators under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
