70th Ballon d'Or ceremony held in London

Overview

The 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony is being held at the London Palladium, marking the first time the prestigious award has been presented outside of France. Organized by France Football in partnership with UEFA, the event commemorates the 70th anniversary of the award and pays tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner in 1956.

In the men’s category, the field remains highly competitive. Harry Kane is a primary contender following a season in which he scored 73 goals for Bayern Munich and the England national team; he currently leads betting markets. Other major candidates include Lamine Yamal, who seeks to become the youngest winner in history, and Kylian Mbappé, following a strong individual campaign with Real Madrid. Lionel Messi also remains a nominee at age 39, while the defending champion, Ousmane Dembélé, seeks to retain his title.

The voting process involves 100 journalists from the top-ranked FIFA nations, who evaluate individual performance, collective achievements, and sportsmanship. The ceremony distributes 13 different awards, including categories for the best player, goalkeeper, coach, and young talent.

In the women’s competition, Spanish players from FC Barcelona continue to show dominance, with several nominees seeking to succeed Aitana Bonmatí. Notable finalists in the women’s category include Alexia Putellas, who is seeking her third trophy, as well as Caroline Graham Hansen.

Following a technical error on the official Ballon d’Or website, France Football addressed the accidental publication of articles naming Kane, Mbappé, and Yamal as winners. The organization clarified that the leaked texts were “pre-prepared templates” and do not reveal the actual results of the voting process.
