Football violence at APOEL vs AEL match in Cyprus
Overview
Violence broke out during and after a Cypriot championship football match between APOEL and AEL at the GSP Stadium. While APOEL won the match 6-0, the event was marked by spectator unrest. A 10-year-old girl was injured after being struck in the head by a battery allegedly thrown from the AEL supporters' section, and a police officer was also injured during riots outside the stadium where fans exchanged stones and other objects.
Authorities made several arrests related to the battery throwing, riot participation, and possession of a flare. Following the incident, the Gymnastic Club ‘Ta Pankypria’ (GSP) issued a statement condemning the violence. The club praised the coordination between Cyprus Police and stadium security for restoring order and noted that CCTV footage is being used to identify those involved in throwing objects and flares.
