Forced marriage investigation in Zaragoza

Overview

Spanish National Police in Zaragoza rescued a woman from a forced marriage arrangement orchestrated by her family. The victim had reportedly lived under extreme isolation and control for years, with her family preventing her from pursuing education or working and restricting her freedom of movement.

Following the woman’s escape from her family home, her parents and brother were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking for the purpose of forced marriage, coercion, and domestic violence. Investigators from the Central Unit for Illegal Immigration Networks and Document Falsification (UCRIF) suggest the planned marriage abroad was intended to facilitate legal status for the man involved.
