Forest fire risks and incidents in Western Europe

Overview

In mid-August 2026, drought conditions and high fire risks led to emergency measures and significant wildfire activity in the border regions of France and Germany.

In the French department of Bas-Rhin, authorities implemented strict restrictions to prevent forest fires. Prohibited activities in or near forests included fireworks, cooking fires, and camping fires. Additionally, motorized leisure activities and hunting were subject to specific time-based limitations. Local reports indicated that fires had already been detected in Pfaffenhoffen, Drulingen, and Mertzwiller.

In the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, firefighters responded to two major blazes. In the Westerwald region near Gebhardshain, a fire burned four hectares and prompted the temporary evacuation of 20 households. A larger fire in Langscheid, located in the Vordereifel, consumed approximately 50 hectares and required the deployment of roughly 650 emergency personnel. Operations in these areas eventually stabilized following recent rainfall.
