Former priest accused of financial fraud and elder abuse

Overview

Gregory Allen Madeya, a 69-year-old former Ukrainian Catholic priest from West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, was arrested in Florida facing extradition to Pennsylvania on multiple felony charges. Investigators allege that since approximately 2018, Madeya misappropriated over $740,000 from various religious entities, including several parishes and the Knights of Columbus. Specific allegations include the theft of collection money, fundraising proceeds, and church fees.

In addition to the religious fraud, Madeya is accused of exploiting his elderly mother by using power of attorney to divert more than $230,000 from her investment accounts. This financial exploitation reportedly left her unable to pay nursing home bills, leading to her eviction from care facilities.

Prosecutors allege the stolen funds, which included cash from church collection envelopes, were used to finance an “extravagant and illicit lifestyle.” This reportedly included international travel, cruises, overseas vacations, hotel encounters, and the purchase of heroin. Authorities also noted the purchase of a $35,500 Ford Mustang, which was allegedly given to an associate. During a search of a residence shared by Madeya, investigators reported finding drug paraphernalia, including needles, glass pipes, and suspected heroin residue. Madeya faces charges including theft and the financial exploitation of an elderly or dependent person, while investigations into the final destination of all funds continue.
