France reusable menstrual product reimbursement
Overview
Starting October 1, 2026, the French health insurance system (Assurance Maladie) will begin reimbursing specific reusable menstrual products, such as menstrual cups and menstrual underwear, to combat period poverty.
Reimbursement eligibility is structured into two groups: individuals under the age of 26 can receive between 55% and 65% reimbursement, while beneficiaries of the Complémentaire santé solidaire (C2S) are eligible for 100% reimbursement regardless of age. Coverage is capped at two products per rolling year and requires products to be purchased at a pharmacy. To qualify, items must meet specific regulatory standards, including Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification and a minimum absorption capacity of 12 ml; notably, washable sanitary pads are excluded from the scheme.
In conjunction with these policy changes, Université Paris Nanterre has announced a free distribution of organic cotton menstrual underwear for its students on October 13, 2026, in collaboration with the brand MOODZ.
