Fraud and identity investigations in Jammu and Kashmir

Overview

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have filed several chargesheets addressing various forms of fraud and illegal residency.

In the Jammu division, the Crime Branch investigated cases involving forged educational certificates used to secure government employment. Additionally, the Special Crime Wing filed chargesheets against 65 individuals concerning the illegal stay of Pakistani nationals. The investigation revealed that some individuals from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir used valid documents to enter India in the late 1970s before obtaining Indian identity documents through fraud to secure government jobs.

In Kashmir, the Economic Offences Wing filed a chargesheet against five individuals for an alleged conspiracy to sell migrant property in the Baramulla district through impersonation and forged documents. Separately, the Special Crime Wing filed chargesheets regarding an investment scam that allegedly defrauded Srinagar residents of approximately Rs 16.78 lakh through an unregistered foreign exchange scheme.
