Fraud and identity theft cases in Turkey

Overview

Legal proceedings are underway in Turkey involving separate allegations of financial fraud and identity theft.

In one case, Abdurrahman Evli, a carpenter apprentice, faces potential prison sentences of up to 250 years. His bank accounts and mobile lines were allegedly used in widespread fraud schemes involving fake social media advertisements for rentals. Evli claims his identity was stolen after he provided his phone to an acquaintance to facilitate wage payments.

In a separate matter, former bank manager Seçil Erzan is undergoing a retrial in Istanbul. Prosecutors have requested a prison sentence of between 56 years and 211 years for Erzan, who is accused of defrauding numerous individuals, including high-profile figures, by promising high returns through a fraudulent investment fund. The prosecution has also requested prison terms for five other defendants.
