Fraud and job scams in India
Overview
Indian law enforcement agencies have conducted multiple operations to dismantle forgery and employment-related fraud rackets across various regions.
In early October, authorities targeted high-value operations involving the impersonation of government officials. In Mumbai, an individual was arrested for allegedly using counterfeit documents from the Prime Minister’s Office and the military to defraud businesses of over ₹21 crore. In Jammu and Kashmir, several arrests were made concerning land and job scams, including a case where individuals used forged appointment orders and fake signatures from the Union Home Secretary to recruit Special Police Officers.
By late October, investigations continued into separate incidents of employment fraud. In Himachal Pradesh, a woman was arrested for allegedly defrauding jobseekers of approximately ₹20 lakh by promising government appointments. In Telangana, police registered a case against a man accused of duping a woman of ₹4.5 lakh with the promise of a municipal office position, an incident that reportedly involved physical and sexual assault.
