Fraud investigations and arrests in Kenya

Overview

In Kenya, authorities have been targeting various fraudulent schemes involving insurance and digital identity theft.

Initially, detectives from the Insurance Fraud Investigations Unit arrested Edwin Odhuambo Oduor in connection with nine fraudulent compensation claims. These claims were linked to a September 2023 road accident on Kangundo Road, where investigators found that supporting documents had been fraudulently obtained from Mama Lucy Hospital and Kayole Police Station.

Subsequent operations expanded to target SIM-swap fraud. During an operation in Mtwapa, police arrested Phyllis Njagi, who allegedly posed as a government employee conducting Social Health Authority registration to steal personal details and access mobile money. During this arrest, investigators recovered several insurance certificates and number-plate casings.
