Fraud investigations in Brazil
Overview
Brazilian authorities have launched several investigations into various forms of forgery and fraudulent activities across multiple regions. In São Paulo, police arrested a merchant for selling counterfeit sporting goods. Simultaneously, Federal Police in Macapá investigated a scheme involving the falsification of academic documents linked to a private higher education institution. Further investigations include an inquiry in Curitiba regarding the fraudulent use of phytosanitary certifications on wooden packaging.
In Rio de Janeiro, ‘Operation Gabarito’ is targeting a suspected scheme to manipulate results in a public civil service examination at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Additionally, the Federal Police launched ‘Operation Efeito Colateral’ to investigate the irregular importation and sale of the weight-loss medication tirzepatide, targeting a scheme allegedly sourcing the substance from China.
Expanding the scope of financial fraud investigations, the Federal Police initiated ‘Operation São Silvestre’ to target digital investment scams involving cryptocurrency and automated bots. Authorities have frozen R$ 100 million in assets belonging to 15 individuals and 13 companies, including F2 Trading and Wish Money. The investigation targets groups that promised monthly returns of up to 70% through fraudulent trading bots and bitcoin operations, affecting over 10,000 victims between 2018 and 2020. Search and seizure warrants were executed across ten cities in the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Pernambuco. Those implicated face charges including money laundering, fraud, criminal association, and crimes against the national financial system.
Other regional law enforcement actions include ‘Operation Pseudographos’ in Guaíba, which is investigating a labor outsourcing company for using falsified financial capacity certificates to win municipal bids, and an investigation in Mato Grosso into a woman suspected of managing a drug trafficking faction's treasury from a penitentiary in Cuiabá.
