Fraudulent impersonation of energy providers
Overview
Energy companies are being targeted by various fraudulent schemes designed to steal personal and financial data. In Italy, Enel reported an increase in ‘missed call scams’ and caller ID spoofing, where scammers use fake international prefixes to induce unauthorized phone charges or impersonate utility staff to obtain sensitive data. To combat this, Enel launched the ‘Verifica chi ti ha chiamato’ platform and a secure short number, 140, for customer service.
In Romania, a separate phishing campaign has emerged targeting users in Dâmbovița county by impersonating the provider ENGIE. This scam utilizes fake emails and SMS messages regarding supposed refunds to lure victims to fraudulent websites. These sites mimic official company pages to collect contact details and sensitive banking information, including IBANs and full card numbers.
