Frederick II heritage preservation in Italy

Overview

In early August 2026, heritage projects related to Emperor Frederick II were introduced in Lucera and Palazzo San Gervasio. In Lucera, the Archeoclub d'Italia APS presented the “Torneo delle Chiavi,” a project to restore and convert the medieval Palatium into a museum dedicated to Frederick II. Simultaneously, a conference at the Domus Federiciana in Palazzo San Gervasio explored the architectural and philosophical legacy of the Emperor and his son, Manfredi di Svevia.

By late August, the cities of Lucera and Jesi—the latter being the Emperor’s birthplace—signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cultural cooperation based on their shared historical ties to Frederick II. This agreement supports the development of the “Stupor Mundi” Museum Hub, which includes the repurposing of the Palatium into a facility featuring museum spaces, a media library, and conference areas. A participatory design phase for the project is set to begin in September.
