French enforcement of the Ripost law

Overview

Authorities in France have begun implementing the ‘Loi Ripost’ to sanction unauthorized gatherings and large-scale events.

In Pas-de-Calais, officials applied the law for the first time following a nocturnal car rally involving roughly 400 vehicles and 2,000 people. The enforcement resulted in license suspensions for several drivers and a driving ban for a foreign national. Authorities are continuing to review surveillance footage to identify more participants.

In Calvados, the prefecture has issued warnings regarding an unauthorized free party involving approximately 300 people. Under the Ripost law, organizers of undeclared gatherings face up to two years in prison and a €30,000 fine, while participants in gatherings exceeding 250 people may face six months in prison and a €7,500 fine.
