French income tax settlement and property tax updates

Overview

The settlement period for 2026 income tax balance payments in France commenced on September 25. This collection operation, managed by the Direction générale des finances publiques (DGFiP), affects approximately 13.8 million households. For balances exceeding 300 euros, payments are being collected in four installments scheduled for September 25, October 26, November 26, and December 28. Amounts of 300 euros or less are collected in a single transaction.

Taxpayers are cautioned regarding potential banking complications. If a bank honors a debit despite insufficient funds, the account may incur overdraft interest (agios) and intervention commissions. If the bank rejects the debit order, taxpayers may face rejection fees, which are legally capped at 20 euros per rejection under the Monetary and Financial Code. Failure to resolve these issues may result in further tax penalties.

Property tax (taxe foncière) deadlines remain upcoming. Online payments are due by October 20, while check, transfer, or cash payments must be completed by October 15. For amounts exceeding 300 euros, online payment is mandatory. Those wishing to use automatic scheduled withdrawals for property tax must register by September 30.

Relief measures continue to be available, including potential reductions or exemptions for property owners over 65 based on fiscal income. Additionally, CAF social benefits, such as RSA and housing aid, are scheduled for disbursement on October 5, 2026. An online correction service for 2025 income declarations remains available until November 30, 2026.
