French Ligue 1 referee sentenced for domestic violence
Overview
In July 2026, Ligue 1 referee Abdelatif Kherradji was scheduled to appear before the tribunal judiciaire in Nîmes on 7 August for alleged domestic-violence offences against his ex-partner, with prosecutors describing incidents in March and May that involved physical aggression.
During the proceedings, Kherradji’s former partner testified that he “grabbed her by the neck, insulted her, pulled her hair for several metres and threw her to the ground.” Kherradji denied any wrongdoing, claiming he acted only to avoid an attack from an aggressive partner and describing the legal process as a “nightmare” that threatened his career.
On 19 August, the Nîmes criminal court found Kherradji guilty of the domestic violence acts. He was sentenced to six months of suspended prison time. The court also ordered him to attend a domestic violence training course at his own expense and imposed a three-year ban on contacting the victim. While Kherradji’s lawyer expressed disappointment following the verdict, the French Football Federation has not yet provided an immediate indication regarding his potential suspension.
