French political leadership popularity decline

French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu continue to face historic lows in public popularity. Recent polling from early September 2026 indicates that Macron’s approval rating has reached 16%, the lowest level recorded during his presidency since 2017, while unfavorable opinions have risen to 81%. Lecornu’s popularity remains at approximately 20%.

Public dissatisfaction is driven by several key issues. Citizens have cited concerns regarding purchasing power (54%), the future of the social security system (40%), the environment (31%), immigration (31%), and national debt and deficits (30%). This follows a period of high disapproval among voters aged 65 and older, as well as supporters of right-wing parties like National Rally and Reconquête.

Even within the centrist coalition—including Renaissance, MoDem, and Horizons—Macron’s approval has seen a significant decline to 53%. According to the Ipsos BVA-CESI barometer, this represents a 19-point drop among his own political base.

As the 2027 presidential election approaches, public sentiment is characterized by growing pessimism; approximately 71% of citizens are seeking a “real change,” and 74% believe the country’s situation will deteriorate. While party loyalty is eroding, voters appear to move between neighboring political spheres. Current polling scenarios place Marine Le Pen of the Rassemblement National at the forefront of first-round intentions, followed by Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Edouard Philippe. The administration continues to face challenges regarding the national debt, which exceeds 117% of France’s GDP.
