French rural mobility initiatives

In July 2026 French local authorities expanded transport options for underserved residents. The intercommunal community of De l’Oust à Brocéliande signed a three‑year partnership with the nonprofit Néo Mobilité to run a solidarity vehicle‑rental scheme, offering low‑cost cars and a scooter to job‑seekers and others lacking private transport. The service includes personalised mobility support and is funded with an €11,500 contribution from the community.

Later that month, the French government reinforced winter‑driving safety rules for mountainous zones and simultaneously launched Atchoum Mobilité, an on‑demand rural car‑pooling platform. The service targets older adults, non‑car owners, and anyone needing reliable travel for appointments, shopping or leisure, providing driver compensation and insurance.

Together, these steps illustrate a broader push to improve rural mobility in France, combining subsidised vehicle access, safety regulations, and shared‑transport platforms to address transport barriers for residents in sparsely served areas.
