French social housing and elderly care assistance
Overview
France maintains several social assistance programs to assist citizens with housing and elderly care. The Aide sociale à l'hébergement (ASH) supports elderly individuals with accommodation costs in residential facilities or with family caregivers, provided they meet specific age and residency requirements. Additionally, the Allocation de Logement Sociale (ALS) provides housing assistance for various groups, including students, to help manage rent costs based on household income and location.
Effective October 1, 2026, housing assistance payments distributed by the CAF, including APL, ALS, and ALF, will undergo a revaluation. This increase is an automatic adjustment indexed to the rent reference index (IRL), which rose by approximately 1.15% in the second quarter of 2026. Beneficiaries do not need to take action to receive this adjustment.
