Frost Museum of Science Pixar exhibition

Overview

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami has launched ‘The Science Behind Pixar’, an interactive exhibition developed in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios and the Museum of Science, Boston. The exhibit, which runs through April 11, 2027, explores the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and animation.

Featuring over 50 hands-on elements across eight production phases, the exhibition allows visitors to engage with processes ranging from character modeling to rendering. Interactive components enable guests to simulate effects such as light, water, or muscle movement, and to perform tasks like creating digital sculptures or solving lighting challenges.

Hidekel Olivo-Pinales, the museum’s public programs manager, noted that the display illustrates how scientific principles, such as the use of 24 frames per second to create motion, are essential to the medium. The exhibition aims to demonstrate that animated film production is ‘100 percent art and 100 percent science’.
