Fuerza del Pueblo criticism of Dominican security
Overview
Members of the Fuerza del Pueblo party have issued criticisms regarding the Dominican government’s public security and crime management.
In mid-September, Raúl Martínez, head of the party’s Legal Affairs Secretariat, argued that police reforms implemented over the previous six years have failed to transform the security landscape. He cited a shooting in the Los Coquitos sector of Boca Chica as evidence of a national crisis and claimed the government lacks the capacity to control criminal gangs.
By October, Ignacio Ditrén, the party’s Secretary of Municipal Affairs, expanded these criticisms, accusing the administration of using official statistics to minimize the reality of rising insecurity. Ditrén noted that criminal activity is spreading into broader social spaces and criticized the Ministry of Interior and Police for its silence. He also expressed concern regarding the social impact on youth in low-income sectors, noting that a lack of legal consequences for illicit activities creates negative role models.
