BJP wins majority in Gandhinagar municipal elections

Overview

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a majority in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) civic elections, winning 38 of the 44 available seats. While the BJP maintains control of the state capital’s civic body, its total decreased from the 41 seats held in the 2021 elections.

The Indian National Congress saw a modest increase, rising from two seats in 2021 to five seats in the current term. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a significant setback, failing to win any seats and seeing its vote share drop from 21.77% in 2021 to 4.37%. One seat was secured by an independent candidate.

Beyond Gandhinagar, the BJP also retained power in the Thara and Okha municipalities. In Thara, the BJP won 19 of 24 seats, while the Congress won five. In Okha, the BJP won 33 of 36 seats, including four uncontested positions, leaving the Congress with the remaining three seats.

Following the results, Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the outcome as a “resounding victory.” He noted the party’s performance in municipal corporations and used the results to criticize the track records of both the Congress party and the Aam Aadmi Party.
