Gastroenteritis outbreak in Rhodes

Overview

Health authorities in Rhodes have responded to a significant surge in gastroenteritis cases. Initially, medical professionals reported between 40 and 50 patients presenting at emergency departments daily, with the illness accounting for approximately 40% to 60% of all medical visits in the private sector. While doctors noted such outbreaks are common in summer, the volume was described as notably higher than in previous years.

By late August, data revealed that 298 individuals presented at Rhodes General Hospital with symptoms between August 1 and August 20, 2026. This figure marks a notable increase over the 201 cases recorded during the same period in August 2025.

In response, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) has intervened. Authorities have requested extensive inspections of the city’s water supply system, including the collection of samples from the network, wells, springs, and reservoirs. Investigations are also reviewing biological treatment plants, seawater, and residual chlorine measurement records from May through August 2026.
