General Motors strategic industrial and supply chain shifts
Overview
General Motors is executing a multi-faceted strategy involving domestic manufacturing expansion, educational investment, and supply chain security. The company has committed to spending more than $16 billion on U.S. manufacturing, research, and development in 2026, which includes relocating certain vehicle models from China or Mexico to American factories.
To support the future workforce, GM provided a $250,000 grant to the College for Creative Studies to bolster STEAM education and design programs.
In response to technological demands, GM has secured its semiconductor supply chain through a Strategic Customer Agreement with Micron Technology and a $4.5 billion facility to prepay suppliers for critical parts. Additionally, the company has expanded into defense production, supplying missile-housing components for Lockheed Martin’s Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptors, with leadership projecting approximately $700 million in defense revenue for the year.
