George Enescu 145th birth anniversary commemorations

In August 2026, various cultural events and competitions are being held in Romania to celebrate classical music and the legacy of composer George Enescu, marking his 145th birth anniversary.

The George Enescu International Competition, themed ‘In search of excellence’, features a program of international masterclasses, open rehearsals, and contemporary composition sessions in Bucharest, including a conducting masterclass led by Artistic Director Cristian Măcelaru. Separately, the Ipotești Memorial Center is hosting the 4th ‘Seri Eminesciene’ National Folk Music Festival-Competition for young performers.

Commemorative activities include an ‘In Memoriam George Enescu’ concert at Palatul Suțu performed by the Musica Viva Ensemble, organized by the George Enescu National Museum. The MINA – Museum of Immersive New Art is also presenting ‘George Enescu – Poema Română: Immersive Experience’, an audiovisual series using historical recordings.

Additional tributes have expanded across various locations. In Bacău, the George Enescu International Airport hosted a musical production titled ‘Romanian Longing’ by the George Apostu Culture Centre, featuring soprano Gabriela Iștoc and ballet performances. Regional activities include a book exhibition at the Valeriu Butulescu Municipal Library in Petroșani and a painting installation by Adrian Dică at the Palatul Cantacuzino. Internationally, tributes including flowers and Romanian flags were placed at Enescu’s grave in the Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

Looking ahead, the George Enescu Festival has announced that preparations for its 28th edition, scheduled for August 2027, are already underway with an estimated budget of 73.9 million lei.
