German amateur footballer poisoning investigation

Authorities in Germany are investigating the death of a 30-year-old amateur footballer, identified as Philipp, following a TuS 1912 Rockenberg club trip to Dresden in June 2025. While initial suspicions suggested food poisoning from fish consumed during the excursion, toxicological examinations and an autopsy conducted by the Gießen public prosecutor's office revealed the victim had been killed by a lethal substance.

A 35-year-old teammate, identified as Marius V., has been arrested and taken into custody. Forensic investigations determined the death was caused by sepsis and multiple organ failure resulting from the deliberate administration of toxic substances. Marius V. was apprehended by special police forces shortly before his scheduled wedding.

Chief Public Prosecutor Thomas Hauburger stated that investigators believe the motive for the intentional poisoning was revenge, noting that “poisoning murders are extremely rare and therefore this case is particularly unusual.” While local media have suggested the motive stemmed from a dispute over a woman, official confirmation of this specific motive has not been released. The TuS Rockenberg club described the incident as an unexpected tragedy.
