German biodiversity and environmental funding
Overview
Germany has committed significant financial resources to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration projects in various regions.
In Madagascar, Germany provided 87.2 million euros to the Foundation for Protected Areas and Biodiversity of Madagascar (FAPBM). This funding aims to secure long-term financing for 75 protected areas. Through the GIZ cooperation agency, initiatives have focused on land restoration, sustainable forest management, renewable energy installation, and training for farmers in climate-resilient cultivation.
In Colombia, the German government pledged up to 22 million euros in non-reimbursable funds to support ecosystem restoration and biodiversity projects. Managed by the Colombian Ministry of Environment and the German Development Bank (KfW), the initiative will fund between nine and 18 projects focused on territories organized around water resources, including indigenous and Afro-descendant community lands.
