German coffee market price trends

Reports indicate shifting dynamics in coffee costs and availability within the German market. Retailers such as Rossmann and Amazon have offered Lavazza whole-bean varieties at a discounted price of 13.99 euros per kilogram.

A study of 1,232 cafes across ten major German cities found average prices of 2.58 euros for an espresso, 3.80 euros for a cappuccino, and 4.33 euros for a latte macchiato, with regional variations noted between cities like Cologne and Bremen.

In response to rising costs driven by energy, transport, and global market fluctuations, supermarkets like Kaufland have introduced significant discounts. For example, Käfer coffee beans have been offered at 9.99 euros per kilogram, a 33 percent reduction from the regular price. Analysts suggest that purchasing whole beans or loose powder remains a more cost-effective alternative to expensive capsule options, which can cost as much as 92.26 euros per kilogram.

Recent data also highlights evolving consumption habits in Germany and Austria. In Vienna, there is a high preference for coffee consumed at home or on the go, with a notable generational divide: Gen Z shows a significantly higher preference for coffee-to-go compared to Baby Boomers. Regarding brewing technology in German households, filter coffee machines remain the most widespread device, despite the popularity of capsule and automatic machines.
