German consumer fraud warnings

Entities: German police · Sparkasse · German tax authority · Kreispolizeibehörde Paderborn · Federal Office for Information Security

Overview

Since the late‑July alerts, German authorities have continued to warn about a wave of phishing emails masquerading as Sparkasse communications. The latest messages, observed on 29 July 2026, again use the subject “Verification Required” and threaten account blockage unless recipients confirm their online‑banking credentials by 2 August 2026. The emails feature a generic greeting, an unprofessional sender address and a link that leads to a counterfeit login page. They also warn that failure to act by the deadline may force a branch visit.

Consumer‑advice organisations reiterate that customers should ignore and delete the message, avoid clicking any links, and verify any request only through the official Sparkasse app or website. The Federal Office for Information Security advises anyone who may have entered credentials to block online banking immediately via the emergency hotline 116 116 and to report the incident to their bank and the police.

The campaign primarily targets Sparkasse customers in Germany and may also reach users in Austria, seeking personal login details, PINs and other banking information. Earlier warnings also covered fake digital‑vignette portals, counterfeit tax‑administration audit notices and fraudulent fixed‑term‑deposit offers, with similar advice to verify official sources and report suspicious activity.
