German investigations into Islamic State activity

Overview

German authorities have conducted several arrests related to Islamic State (IS) activities and war crimes. In late September, the Federal Prosecutor's Office ordered the arrest of a suspect in Hessen accused of being an IS combatant in Iraq between 2016 and 2017.

By early October, security operations expanded. In North Rhine-Westphalia, police executed raids in Hagen and Unna, detaining three men—a 33-year-old German national and two Syrian nationals aged 20 and 24—on suspicion of planning an Islamist attack. Authorities noted the group had been monitored since the beginning of the year due to radicalization. While the German national remains in custody, the two Syrian suspects were released following a court decision in Hagen.

In Thuringia, a man born in Kuwait was arrested in Eisenach for allegedly serving as an armed military policeman for IS in Iraq until early 2017. Additionally, a Syrian national, Ibrahim A., was taken into custody on suspicion of committing war crimes, specifically the execution of three prisoners in Syria in 2015.
